Katie Aubrecht is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Canada Research Chair Tier II in Health Equity and Social Justice at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Dr. Aubrecht’s interdisciplinary research program maps marginality and mental health, rurality and resilience across the life span, in community and institutionalized sites of care. She draws on intersectional disability studies, aging studies and participatory, decolonizing and arts-informed qualitative research methods to analyze mental health education, policy and practice.
The Canada Research Chair builds on previous work on person- and family-centred dementia, mental and behavioural health care practices, programs and policies, conducted at the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging and Department of Family Studies and Gerontology, Mount Saint Vincent University. This work was supported by two Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) postdoctoral fellowships, and a Maritime Strategy for Patient Oriented Research Postdoctoral Award. It is also informed by Dr. Aubrecht’s graduate research on Canadian mental health policy funded by SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships doctoral and master’s awards. Dr. Aubrecht is a member of the inaugural cohort and network of CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research Health System Impact (HSI) Fellows.
