Gustavo S. Betini worked as an evolutionary ecologist, studying how ecological and evolutionary processes interact to shape organismal response to rapidly changing environments. He moved from Brazil to Canada, where he completed his PhD in Ecology. He worked for six years as a research associate investigating how changes in land use (agriculture) and climate change impact species interactions and the resilience of populations.

More recently, Gustavo became interested in understanding how these same environmental changes can impact human mental health. In 2020, he started a PhD in Public Health at the University of Waterloo to investigate the effects of climate change on mental health, including the effects of COVID-19.

Gustavo wants to develop scientific knowledge to inform public health guidelines and policies to improve people’s mental health. When he is not busy cooking for his kids, he enjoys playing music and bird watching.
